چکیده
We report optical observations of the GRB 980329 error box which represent the second earliest detection of the GRB 980329 optical transient. We determine R = 23.7 ± 0.5 mag on 29.89 March, which is consistent with R = 23.6 ± 0.2 mag as reported by Palazzi et al. (1998) on 29.99 March. Based on extrapolations of the light curve we claim that the R-band magnitude of the GRB 980329 host galaxy should lie in the range 26.8 mag < R < 29 mag. We also discuss the similarities with GRB 970111.

The Discovery of the Radio Afterglow From the Optically Dim γ - Ray Burst of March 29 , 1998
We report on the discovery of a variable radio source, VLA J070238.0+385044, associated with the proposed x-ray counterpart, 1SAX J0702.6+3850 of GRB 980329. The source was monitored from one day after the burst to one month later at its variability, compactness and spectrum, we identify VLA J070238.0+385044 as the afterglow from GRB 980329. We interpret the rapid flux density variations as int...
متن کاملWas GRB 980329 at z ∼ 5?
The optical transient (OT) associated with GRB 980329 was remarkably red. It has previously been concluded that this was the result of dust extinction in the host galaxy (Taylor et al. 1998; Reichart et al. 1998; Palazzi et al. 1998). However, an extinction model can only agree with the data if the I band observations taken about 0.8 days after outburst are discounted (Klose, Meusinger, & Lehma...
متن کاملH 2 Absorption and Fluorescence from Gamma Ray Bursts in Molecular Clouds
If a gamma ray burst with strong UV emission occurs in a molecular cloud, there will be observable consequences resulting from excitation of the surrounding H 2. The UV pulse from the GRB will pump H 2 into vibrationally-excited levels which produce strong absorption at wavelengths λ 1650Å. As a result, both the prompt flash and later afterglow will exhibit strong absorption shortward of 1650Å,...
متن کاملPrompt GeV emission in the synchrotron self-Compton model for Gamma-Ray Bursts
The detection in 10 bursts of an optical counterpart emission (i.e. during the prompt GRB phase) that is 10−104 brighter than the extrapolation of the burst spectrum to optical frequencies suggests a synchrotron self-Compton origin for the GRB emission, synchrotron producing the optical counterpart emission. In this model, the second upscattering of the burst photons yields a prompt GeV–TeV emi...
متن کاملBv Ri Observations of the Optical Afterglow of Grb 990510 Based on the Observations Collected at the Las Campanas Observatory 1 M Swope Telescope
We present BV RI observations of the optical counterpart to the Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) 990510 obtained with the Las Campanas 1.0-m telescope between 15 and 48 hours after the burst. The temporal analysis of the data indicates steepening decay, independent of wavelength, approaching asymptotically t −0.76±0.01 at early times (t ≪ 1 day) and t −2.40±0.02 at late times, with the break time at t 0 =...
